InDesign CS5 For Dummies Update

The InDesign CS5.5 update brings one change to what is described in InDesign CS5 For Dummies:

  • There's now an easier way to anchor objects to text. All graphics and text frames display a blue square near the upper right corner. Click and drag that square into the text you want to anchor the object into, then release the mouse button. To create an inline anchored object, hold the Shift key while dragging.

InDesign CS4 for Dummies Updates

  • Chapter 1: After the book went to press, Adobe changed how the default workspaces handle menu options. In the shipping version, all menus are available in all workspaces by default, so you do not have to turn on the Full Menus option as the book describes. (Now, you only need to use this feature if you customize the menu options in a workspace and later decide you want any deleted menu options back for that workspace.)

InDesign CS2 For Dummies Updates

  • The Autocorrect feature does not let you use special characters in its dialog boxes, so you cannot have InDesign automatically replace two hyphens with an em dash.
  • Some readers have reported that the coordinates specified in Chapter 2 don't put elements where they expected. That's because of an InDesign feature that's easy to overlook, called control points. In the far left of the Control palette, you'll see nine squares, representing the corners, sides, and center of an oibject. All the coordinates we specify in this chapter are based on the upper left corner of frames and objects, but InDesign lets you base them on other corners, the sides, or the center. If your active control point — that's the one in black — is not the upper left corner, nothing will be positioned where you expect when you follow the instructions in this chapter. Fortunately, it's easy to change the active control point: Just click the one you want to be active, and it will become black (the others become white).
